New York - Facial plastic surgeon Jon Turk made an appearance on MyFOXNY's morning show Good Day New York on March 24th. Dr. Turk was interviewed by co-hosts Rosanna Scotto and Greg Kelly as part of the program's "What Do You Do?" segment, which focuses on the duties of people in various professions throughout the city.

Dr. Turk covered a broad range of topics with Scotto and Kelly, including where the "plastic" in "plastic surgery" comes from. Ultimately, this was a great opportunity for Dr. Turk to offer insight gleaned from his many years of experience in the field.

Non-Invasive and Minimally Invasive Surgery

One of the many topics that Dr. Turk brought up were the great advances in non-surgical and minimally invasive aesthetic rejuvenation. Thanks to new discoveries and innovations, plastic surgeons hope to minimize patient's needs for surgery, relying instead on skin tightening and other advanced therapies.

Dealing with "iPad Syndrome" Around the Neckline

One example of these advanced non-invasive therapies is Exilis radio frequency skin tightening, which is ideal for addressing laxity around the jaw and neckline. This is an issue that Dr. Turk calls "iPad syndrome," because of the unflattering reflection of the neckline seen in the iPad screen.

Thanks to Exilis and other non-invasive skin tightening treatments, manypatients are able to get the look they want without having to undergo a surgery such as a facelift or even facial liposuction.

Dispelling Myths About Liposuction

Dr. Turk had a chance to discuss the nature of liposuction during his appearance as well, addressing some misconceptions about the procedure. Most importantly, he noted that while the removal of fat cells does result in the body placing new fat cells in different parts of the body, patients would need to gain a lot of weight to experience major aesthetic problems. Dr. Turk added that this is not a concern for most patients and that liposuction is highly effective for many patients.

When to Say "No" to Certain Patients

Stories about celebrities overdoing cosmetic surgery have been in the news for quite some time, which prompted the co-hosts of Good Day New York to ask Dr. Turk if he's ever told a patient "no" when it comes to surgery. He replied that he has, and that it's come as a result of his experience and his careful assessment of the patient's needs for surgery. Since each patient’s situation is unique, Dr. Turk considers the circumstances of the patient and makes cautious decisions.

When to Think about Cosmetic Surgery

One thing that Dr. Turk stressed was that the surgical consultation process is not always about figuring out what surgery to perform then and there, but about planning for the future. Patients can benefit from a visit with Dr. Turk simply to discuss aesthetic goals down the line and what treatments may be best for meeting those goals.
