What Is the AAAASF?
The AAAASF is the largest non-profit accrediting organization in the United States and is nearly universally acknowledged for having established the gold standard for quality patient care. The organization was founded in 1980 and has accredited more than 2,000 ambulatory surgery facilities since its inception. While this number may seem high, it is dwarfed by the number of facilities that operate without peer review or any sort of inspection process. This makes those facilities that are AAAASF accredited particularly noteworthy.
What Are the Standards for AAAASF Accreditation?
The purpose of the AAAASF is to ensure that the facilities that it certifies provide the highest standard of patient care, with a special focus on safety. The AAASF takes into account not only the operating room, itself, but also the equipment and the credentials of the surgeon and his or her staff. The standards are continually being reviewed and revised to rise to the current state of the art.
Among the standards that AAAASF imposes for accreditation:
- Surgeons must have hospital privileges for any procedure performed in the facility
- Anesthesia professionals must be used for deeper levels of anesthesia
- Specific standards for safety regarding the surgical environment, equipment, and drugs
- The facility must meet hospital standards
- The facility must comply with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations
In earning AAAASF accreditation, Dr. Turk, his staff, and his facility have been found to have met or exceeded all of the standards set forth by the organization, including the use of anesthesia professionals from Mt. Sinai during procedures. Dr. Turk shares the philosophy of the AAAASF that, in everything he does, patient safety must always come first.
What the AAAASF Accreditation Means to Patients
If you are considering facial plastic surgery, you want to select a surgeon who is experienced and highly trained, with a history of successful results and high levels of patient satisfaction. Many plastic surgeons are performing procedures in their offices in order to save the cost of using an accredited hospital and the scrutiny of peer review, oversight, and inspection.
As a patient, you owe it to yourself to seek out a surgeon who is fully qualified to perform every procedure he offers and is only too happy to hold his work up to the watchful eyes of his peers. Dr. Turk is just such a plastic surgeon, and he has the AAAASF accreditation to back it up.
